The author addresses a question posed by R' Zev Yehudah Lichtenstein regarding a rumor that Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein of Kolomyee visited America. The rumor goes that Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein of Kolomyee signed his name in a Pinkas of one of the Shuls in the East Side of New York.

The author denies the rumor claiming that Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein of Kolomyee would never visit America because of the spiritual situation of that time.

But if you look in the Sefer Rav Sholom authored by Rabbi Sholom Adler , you see Reb Hillel of Kolomyee advised his nephew Rabbi Sholom Adler to go to America to collect money.

מיט די בריווען ציעט דער מו"ל ארויס עטליכע מסקנות וועלכע זענען געווען לוטה בערפל איבער ר' ברוך בענדיט ל"ש מוועטש, קודם אז ער איז נישט געווען רב נאר דיין אין וועטש און אויך אז ער ליגט אין פראג און נישט אין וועטש ווי אנדערע האבן געמיינט.

למעשה, מיר דאכט אז דער ביה"ח אין פראג איז קאי וקיים ולא שלטו בו ידי הנאצים ימ"ש, ווייסט איינער צו מ'האט אמאל אפירגעזוכט די מציבה פון ר' ברוך בענדיט? עס איז דאך פארהאן טויזענטער אייניקלעך, און פראג איז גרינג צוצוקומען, אפשר ווייסט איינער מער פרטים?

English Translation;

At the end of the Sefer Das Chasam Sofer (brought to print by HaRav Ben Tzion HaKohen Strasser) three letters are printed regarding Rebbe Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein (father of Rabbi Yaakov Koppel and Rabbi Hillel Me'Kolomyye).

Rabbi Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein was not healthy and was traveling to Carlsbad‎, Czech Republic. Because of money matters he stopped in Prague. The Chasam Sofer sent a letter to Rabbi Elezer Horowitz, Head of the Rabbinical Court in Vienna, Austria that he should write a letter to the wealthy individual Reb Lemil, from Prague, Czech Republic, that he should help out Rabbi Baruch Bendit with his situation.

In the end, Rabbi Baruch Bendit became very sick and died in Prague. He was also buried there, in the Prague cemetery.

After his death his son Rabbi Hillel Me'Kolomyye sent a thank you letter to the people of Prague, for all the good they did for his father.

These three letters, as mentioned before and his death date "Chuf" "Ches" "Cheshvon" 5598 (November 16, 1838) are included.

HaRav Ben Tzion HaKohen Strasser concludes, that Rabbi Baruch Bendit was Dayan in Vech, not Rav as assumed and that he was buried in Prague, not in Vech.
Miller leaves off his post with a question: Has any one tried to search for his gravestone, as the Prague cemetery was literally untouched by the Nazis?

These letters are very interesting, as they answer the question raised by many, why Rabbi Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein was Buried in Prague.

The Author of the Sefer Bais Hillel (printed in Munkacs, 5653) actually raises this question.

In the Sefer Melitzei Aish (authored by Avrohom Stern -1933) it is brought from Rabbi Hillel Weinberger (by the way, he spells his name Hillel with a "yud", so it seems he was named after Rabbi Hillel Me'Kolomyye) that he visited Rabbi Baruch Bendit's gravestone in Prague and he is buried near the Noda Beyehuda.

Rabbi Hillel Weinberg writes that when Rabbi Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein was sick in Carlsbad‎, he said that after his death he should be brought to burial in Prague. The truth is actually the opposite; he never made it to Carlsbad‎ as mentioned before.

The author of Sefer Melitzei Aish is also mistaken regarding his statement that Rabbi Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein was a brother of Rabbi Hillel Me'Kolomyye. Truthfully Rabbi Baruch Bendit Lichtenstein was the father of Rabbi Hillel Me'Kolomyye.

From the three letters, it seems that both the author of Bais Hillel and Rabbi Hillel Weinberg were mistaken regarding the death date of Rabbi Baruch Bendit. He was Niftar on "Chuf" "Ches" "Cheshvon" 5598 (November 16, 1838) not "Chuf" "Hay" Cheshvon (November 13, 1838) as assumed.

Secondly. His death date is confirmed by his death record now published on this site.
